History

We need to understand our past in order to not make the same mistakes in the future. The new syllabus enables students to acquire the knowledge and understanding, historical skills and values and attitudes essential for an appreciation of the past and to prepare them for informed and active citizenship in a changing world.

A student equipped to discuss the issues raised in the History syllabus, is a student able to have opinions and make informed decisions which in turn will shape their own future.

Years 7 to 10 (mandatory)

The focus of study in Years 7 and 8:

World history from ancient times to the modern world
Learning the basic skills required for the effective study of History
The course for Years 9 and 10 provides students with an understanding of Australia’s history, incorporating aspects of civics and citizenship, from 1901 to the present.

Preliminary and HSC Courses

In Years 11 and 12, the courses offered are:

  • Modern History
  • Ancient History
  • History Extension
  • History Extension

HSC Students studying Modern or Ancient History may also elect to study History Extension, a course which further develops their understanding of how historians work.

Ancient History - 2 unit

Students study and analyse past societies, drawing on a variety of disciplines and sources, both written and archaeological. The course empowers students with knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes that are useful for lifelong learning.

Modern History - 2 unit

Students are challenged to consider the great social, technological, economic, political and moral transformations from the 18th Century to the present.
